I don’t have a blog. But if I did, I’d tell the following story …
Last Saturday night I was dressing to go to one Christmas party, while my husband was dressing to go to another (he didn’t check the google family calendar). The kiddos (2 boys, age four AND A HALF – that’s how they say it) were eating chickfila nuggets with sides from our fridge, and we were all waiting on the arrival of our favorite babysitter. One of the boys comes to me in the bathroom, mid-eyeliner-application and says, “Mom, do you know what the Glory of the Lord is?” I say, “Yes.” And hope that he is just checking to see if I know, but of course, the follow-up comes quickly, “What is it?”
Stumped. MDiv? Out the window. I pull the classic, “What do you think it is?” Buying time, but not much. “I don’t know. What is it?”
After some fumbling I am pleased to say that I came up with this answer. “It’s like if you took everything beautiful in the world and put it all together, well, then you’d be close.” I am pleased with this answer until he starts going through a list of everything beautiful he can think of and checking each item out with me to see if he’s “there yet.” This conversation leads the activity of pulling every picture and toy and tree ornament and photo and, well, everything he can get his hands on into a pile in the living room. As the babysitter knocks on the door, I’m thinking, “that’s not the Glory of the Lord; that’s a mess.” But I didn’t say that outoud. Whew.
